Christmas Time! For kids, it’s the time for smiles to be broader and days to be sweeter. For teenagers, it’s the cool and cozy time for parties. For adults, well, pockets could be thinner but anyhow, feelings are warmer with the spirit of giving. For the family, it’s ideally the time to be together. For everyone, it is the time of sharing and most of all, being happy.

What to give is sometimes a dilemma for most people. You are on a budget but you need to give something that’s really something. The most important is something that will be meaningful for the person receiving your gift as it will represent your best wishes for the season. You want that gift as much as possible to have a personal touch to make the person remember that you remembered. Gifts can be in the form of experience like travel.

If you have been busy the whole year with never-ending deadlines and worries on how to keep the business up and running, then it’s time to book your love one or love ones and yourself [of course] for a trip. Give yourself a break. Why not? Relive the spirit. Don’t wait for the Christmas spirits to visit you and “unscrooge” you. Pack your bags and jingle all the way.

What’s in your bag?

1. Bring nothing related to your work or will make you think of work.

2. Bring something red. Wearing red would be perfect.

3. Prepare an exchange gift so nobody gets zero on Christmas day. It will also add to your Christmas program on the go.

4. Bring a Christmas card with you. You won’t be writing this to anyone else. You will be writing this to yourself.

5. If you are going on a road trip, bring your selection of Christmas songs. Sing together to your heart’s content.

6. If you have a guitar and you can play, bring it. You probably have ignored it for quite some time. Let your fingers rock and roll across the fret board and let them rest from the usual scribbling, jotting down of figures and typing on keys. Stretch, strum and sway on your holiday!

7. Make a bullet list of simple things you have missed for the whole year and food you want to eat. The crazier the mission, the more you will enjoy it. Just exclude anything that will put you in jail or will let you end up in the hospital. Common sense please.

8. Go home with a souvenir that you did not buy.

Some of you may say this whole idea is a little bit [or more] crazy. But it’s easy to comment than trying. Let me know what happens on your new Christmas adventure. Whether you have lost your voice while singing the Christmas carols or you have spilled wine all over your clothes on Christmas dinner or have made a complete stranger smile back when you greeted “Merry Christmas”, let me know! [Or you can write them down on your Christmas card.]

Prepare Yourself

Some people get so excited with arranging their travels that they forget to prepare one important element: their own self. When you are going on a travel, you need to remind yourself that you will be outside your comfort zone. You will be away from home. You will be away for a while from everything familiar. You need to set your mind with the purpose of your travel.

Condition yourself mentally, physically and spiritually. You need to be in good condition when you travel. Travel exposes you to a lot of things including diseases. You need to have a healthy body to maintain a strong immune system. Your body can be challenged by external factors such as weather changes, different time zone, availability of food and water.

You need to be alert so you need to have a clear mind. You need to know where you are going, the next ride you will take, or how to get information in case you get lost. Be on guard. A lot f people take advantage of tourists or foreigners in the area. Have a positive outlook and stay focused even if you are travelling for pleasure. Travelling is a learning experience not only technically. It lets you grow as a person.

Inform Your Work or People At Home

Don’t forget to inform your boss or the company that you will be away so you won’t worry about failing to inform them later on. It is also ideal to inform your clients that you will be away so they won’t expect you to be answering their calls or attending to their demands on your travel period. You don’t have to tell them the details of your travel. Just simply inform them that you will be away on the said period. If you are worried about household matters, assign someone you can trust to look after the chores. You can also start securing personal things you are particular about so you don’t have to worry about them being accessed by anyone while you are away.

Set Your Objectives for Your Travel

Know what you want so you will know what to do when you get there and how. If you want to explore the different tourist attractions in your area of destination, you need to consider the time it takes to travel from one point to another for you to estimate how many places you can enjoy in a day and the feasible number of days for you to reach your goal.

Don’t forget an important factor when travelling for pleasure: enjoyment. You will not enjoy the experience if you are pressed for time and you are not satisfied with the outcome. It is best that you plan your tours and research on how to get to those places without too many worries. You will also appreciate the travel because of the learning experience from preparations to enjoying the fruits of your plans.

Budget Your Money

Prepare your budget. You cannot be empty-handed in the middle of your travel especially when you are travelling alone or when your companions depend on you for the travel expenses. Do not depend on credit cards. Always bring sufficient cash to survive through the entire trip. There are places that do not accept credit transactions. There are instances when credit transactions experience problems. You need to be ready for these situations.

Prepare coins and small bills for transportation and other fees. This will help you save time and prevent you from encountering people who take advantage of tourists by pretending they don’t have change for your big bills or who might even give you fake money. You also need to familiarize yourself with the currency if you are going to a foreign country.

Bring The Basics

Put your basic needs on top of your list of things to bring. Keep it basic as much as possible so you get exactly what you need to enjoy your travel the most without putting in unwanted baggage weight. Learn from your previous travels so you will be better prepared this time, and you get to avoid insufficiencies you have encountered from the last one. You know your needs more than anyone.

Travel Light

You’re just on vacation. You don’t need to bring your entire closet. Choose comfortable and light clothes. If you will always be on the move, or depending on the type of activities that you have planned, use the type of bag that will be most convenient for you while you are on the move. Some prefer to bring backpacks instead of huge trunks or wheeled suitcases that already have considerable weight before you even put anything into them. If you will be having frequent transfers like land to boat to land type of trip, backpacks or light duffel bags are more recommendable.

Leave Your Worries Behind

The main purpose of vacation is to unburden yourself. You need to relieve yourself from your daily routines. Worries are one of the main reasons people go on vacation. Going away for a while no matter how few the days are is like giving your house a general cleaning. You need to get rid of the cobwebs and dust that make your house feel old and musty. Worries won’t get you anywhere except sway you back and forth in the same place like a racking chair. Get going without the gloom. Enjoy.

Slow Down

Take the time to enjoy. If you are always under time pressure on your daily schedule, vacation is the time that you are not. Breathe. If you want to explore the area, planning ahead is a good idea. You can estimate how many places you can cover in one day and how many days you need to complete your exploration. You can enjoy the scenic spots if you give yourself sufficient time to go from one place to another without worrying about running out of time. Worrying about time is a major contributor to stress. Plan how you will make your tour such as your means of transportation and your other basic needs so you don’t turn your vacation into a disappointment or worse, disaster.

Try What’s New

Every place has something to offer you that is unique to its culture or geography. You can try the local delicacy or specialty dish, taste the locally grown fruit, see the famous landmarks, watch a local tribe perform an ethnic dance or ritual, buy a local product. Try to visit the place just in time for its local festivity when the local colors or traditions are featured. New experiences nourish your thoughts with new information or knowledge and make you appreciate the purpose of your travel even more. They also give you a renewed feeling. They create unique memories that make your vacation remarkable, and help you to distinguish the place and total experience later on.

People travel for many reasons: work, studies, exploration, experiment, excitement, vacation and healing… and the list goes on. No matter what the reasons are, travelling will always have a personal factor so you need to look after your personal needs. There are things you need but may not be at your immediate reach once you are on your destination. You may be particular with a certain brand such as your anti-allergy medicine that may not be available there especially in another country where the marketed brands are usually different.

Basic Toiletries. If you are staying in a class hotel or resort, chances are they are providing you the basic toiletries like shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste kit and towels. Some may even provide combs. If you are not hypersensitive, then it is really convenient for you. You don’t have to worry about bringing those and it’s a minus on your baggage weight. But, if you easily get allergic to chemicals, it is still advisable that you bring your own hypoallergenic toiletries. If you are going for a budget hotel or inn, don’t expect much from them.

First-Aid Kit. You never know what you will get into on the road. Travel sickness, traveler’s diarrhea, traveler’s flu- all these have been named after the incidence of travel. You can bring over-the-counter medicines for headache, fever, flu and diarrhea. Bring oral rehydration salts that may be available in powder or tablet form so you are constantly hydrated. Dehydration can get you into serious trouble. You may bring povidone iodine as antiseptic for wounds and bandage strips as well. Bring handy flashlight, too.

Light clothing and light materials. Travel light. It is hard to go around with excess weight. You will be carrying your own burden, unless you have maids-in-waiting who will be going along with you. If you want utmost privacy for your travel, then this is the last set up you would want. Instead of the usual heavy towels that you use at home, you can bring the microfiber towel that is used for sports and is an ideal type to bring for travels because of their lightness and high absorbing power. You don’t need the big ones like the size of a regular towel. You can bring one with the size of a long hand towel.

Choose light, comfortable material for your clothes. If you’re going to a winter region, bring light warmers that you can wear under thick overalls. These can help warm you up faster than wearing all layers in thick, heavy material. It will be difficult tiresome for you to move around in too heavy layers of clothing. You may still need thick clothes over these warmers, but at least you don’t have to carry twice as heavy.

Emergency food. Bring a small pack of soda crackers or a chocolate bar just in case you get stranded somewhere. It is hard to function with an empty stomach. A bottle of drinking water is also advisable to keep yourself hydrated. You may also bring some candies as they can help when your stomach is starting to revolt and food is still far from your reach.

Get tips and experience. Ask tips from people who have already been to your destination about their experience. This way, you will have ideas of other necessary things to bring so you can make the necessary preparations.

Research

Go to a place you have never been to before. Research. You can go to your favorite bookstore and browse on travel books. Maps are available. It is advisable that you bring one with you wherever you are going especially if you are totally new to the place. This will not only give you information and direction, but security as well. You never know when the cab driver is already messing up with your meter bill or just taking advantage of the fact that you are a foreigner in that place. You don’t have to be insecure, but you should not be too lax either. You need proper planning.

Do further reading about the place you are interested in. You can do further research on the Web. There are lots of review sites and blogs posted by travel enthusiasts about the places they have been to and your target destination could be one of those. It is insightful to read from someone’s experience, than just knowing geographical facts. It will let you know what and how to prepare for your trip.

Study Your Options Carefully

For your place to stay, read on hotel, resort or inn reviews. There are inexpensive ones that offer good services. Not all expensive accommodations offer the best places or services. So, choose wisely. Just be patient with your research to get your money’s worth. Try to access the main Website of the place or places that you are including in your list. Consider the unbiased opinions and comments of the site’s guests and other review sites. You will be able to notice as you go on with your research which comments are becoming consistent. This will help you narrow down your list until you come up with the final choice.

Decide Wisely

You will find it rewarding once you have reached your destination safely, and your plan has gone smoothly. You cannot rely on anyone more than yourself. You know your preferences more than anyone else, too. It will depend on your personality and taste. If you are the adventurous type, you may prefer to stay in a resort cottage that is near the mountain or beach rather than a hotel or inn on the town proper. If you want to explore both sides of the town, consider a place offering distance that is most favorable for accessibility to both. At all times, safety is a must. Your map can help give you an idea how isolated the place is, or which establishments or residences are near.

Travel Safely

Convenience is another factor. Know the facilities offered by the place especially water, energy and food supply. If you plan to go to the wilderness or to a town far from the city, you may need the service of a travel or native guide. They will help you where to get your supplies and emergency needs in case. You may also try to know where to get assistance when the situation calls for it such as the police station or tourism office.

It is advisable that you inform at least one person you trust where you are going especially if you are travelling alone. Bring your first aid kit such as basic medicine for fever, diarrhea or flu symptoms, oral rehydration salts [powder packets are available so you don’t have to bring heavy bottles of liquids] that are good for diarrhea and dehydration, wound solutions such as povidone iodine, gauze or plaster strips and antiseptics such as alcohol. Travel light. The purpose of travel is to unburden you from worries.

Travel insurance costs you a little more than your total travel cost, but is very useful. Some companies charge $200; some may charge only $50. None the less the services are same. So you have to look for the cheapest travel insurance possible.

A cheap travel insurance does not mean that it is something inferior. As the travel insurance market is very competitive you can get a comprehensive travel insurance service at the lowest price. Many companies are ready to reduce their profit margins so that they can convert their first customers in to regular customers. Of course they expect some positive mouth publicity from you.

The same logic will ensure you to have a better service and the cheapest travel insurance from your old travel insurance company. Whatever may be reason, you will be benefited by the low rates and enjoy affordable travel insurance without losing any of the perks provided by more expensive plan.

Choosing an island cruise is not an easy thing, particularly when you have so many options to choose. When there are more destinations that promise you a great pleasure, you don’t want to choose just one. But your practical choice is really limited. You can cut down the list of destinations short by two yard sticks. They are your departure post and the length of journey.

Departure Port

Although the major cruise companies have departures at all the major ports of the country, your money and distance will limit your departure to certain ports, there by limiting your number choices. For example, if you want to go on a Southern Caribbean cruise of Carnival Cruise lines, you must depart from Fort Lauderdale, San Juan or Barbados and you can’t do it from Port Canaveral. You can only go to the Southern Caribbean, if your port of departure is San Juan.

Length of the journey

The cruise length will drastically reduce your number of choices. Your options will differ a lot when you want to a week long cruise from that of when you choose for a 4 night long cruise. So, once you have made up decisions on what port you will departure and how long you will be on cruise, your selection will be much easier.

However, if you want to go for a particular destination by your heart and soul, just go for it. You will be much more satisfied person than choosing any other available options.
