Great article. However, won’t insurance be one of the first family expenses to go when hard economic times come? I ask because the global financial crisis is going to hit us very hard specially after the dollar crashes due to all the inflation created by the stimulus packages.

This will sound absurd. People in dental offices have often been overheard referring to their credit cards as their “dental insurance”. Ironically, if you visit a dentist once every 15 months, it seems to be a better alternative in some ways. In the sense you’re not making a mandatory monthly payment for a dental plan you are not committed to using that regularly or only use in emergencies.
plus, if you have an extensive amount of work done, like a crown, you could then spread those monthly payments out over the course of a few monthly payments…especially if you have a good credit card that allows you a 9% apr or close to it.

Why do most dental insurance plans cover only the bare minimum and everything else is considered “cosmetic”?

I’m not talking about bleaching either. I’m talking about normal procedures such as fillings. Silver filings covered. White filings “cosmetic”.

This is outrageous.

@Periodontist, cost are different because there is more work involved. Front teeth are easy to work with while back teeth are hard because it involves different procedures. Great read by the way. Thank you.

I am glad that dental insurance is one of the benefits that my employer gives us. I do agree to one of the comments saying dental insurances can be tricky. This is true. So, it’s important that you read and understand the policy carefully so you will have a better understanding of how it will really benefit you when the need arises.

Dental insurance can be tricky. I recently found out that procedures pertaining to the front of my teeth cost different than the same procedure that focuses on the back of me teeth does. Do your research and you hopefully won’t get surprised like I did! drrodbridge.com.

The most problem of all insurances are they do not disclose all aspects in details and later will have a problem when you raise a claim to them. Just learning and read all the things that can be covered or claimed and which one not.
